Shino makes good on his promise, and sure enough, not long after he's back they drink together until dawn, just the two of them. Shino isn't surprised when Yamagi clutches his shirt and kisses him just two drinks in, and as soon as Shino sees the sudden look of panic in his eyes, can anticipate an apology that isn't needed, Shino is kissing Yamagi back with the realization that he is so, so weak for him.

He doesn't know how the hell he went without this for so long; he doesn't know how he didn't see what was right in front of him, this moonshine boy who has stars in his eyes every time he looks at him.

Shino loves being loved by Yamagi, but as time passes, he discovers that he loves loving Yamagi even more.

---

A good two years later, Shino has it all planned out. He bought a ring months ago, a jewel the color of Yamagi's eyes that he keeps stored in a small box in his bedside drawer. He'll get down on one knee, and Yamagi will leap into his arms, and it'll be perfect. Everything will be perfect.

Except that's not what happens at all, because when it comes to Shino, things rarely go according to plan. What happens is that Yamagi stops by the orphanage to pick Shino up after work, a little bit of grease smudged on his cheeks and staining his clothes, and when he kneels down to greet the kids and looks up to offer Shino a smile, warm and fond, Shino blurts out, "When we get married, I want to adopt six kids. Maybe seven. Maybe twelve."

Yamagi stares. Shino stares back. Two little girls clinging to Shino's legs go still, looking up at Shino with wide, startled eyes, and then at each other with open mouths.

"Did you just," Yamagi swallows, "propose to me?"

"Uh," is Shino's eloquent response.

And before either of them can say another word, they both have kids jumping up and down and latching onto limbs and shrieking, "Uncle Shino and Uncle Yamagi are getting married! They're getting married!"

"I," Yamagi says, and Shino pales, because shit, Yamagi still hasn't given him an answer and he screwed up and this is it, he blew it —

"Yamagi," Shino starts, uncharacteristically flustered, but Yamagi holds a hand up, cutting him off. Shino takes the hint, stops, and listens.

"Yes."

"What?" Shino asks, slack-jawed. The world seems to go very still.

"I said yes," Yamagi replies, voice cracking, just a little. "I thought you'd never ask."

---

As soon as they get home, the second the door is locked behind them, then Yamagi launches himself at Shino, tears prickling the corners of his eyes, and Shino has no idea what to do because he didn't mean to make him cry and this was supposed to be so much more romantic and god, he's wanted this for so, so long, knows Yamagi has wanted this even longer.

He doesn't have time to dwell on it, though, because Yamagi is nuzzling his face into his neck and — shit, he's still crying, isn't he — when he says, "Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes," and tilts his head up to press their lips together in a clumsy kiss. Shino pauses, shocked, but just like that his worries dissipate into nothing and he breathes out a laugh, his entire world narrowing down to the sound of Yamagi's voice and nothing else.

Yamagi makes a startled, pleased sound when Shino hoists him up and spins him around, and then Yamagi's arms are around his neck and he's laughing along with him, delighted, and this? This is perfect, so, so perfect, so much better than what he had imagined.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this," he murmurs, his heart just about ready to burst. "I bought a ring and everything." Yamagi just shakes his head, cheeks flushed a delicate pink. His small ponytail must have come undone at some point; Yamagi's hair is long and disheveled and prettier than ever.

"When has anything that has ever happened between us gone according to plan?" Yamagi points out through tears, lips curved into a brilliant smile, eyes bright. He has a point, Shino realizes. Every step of their relationship has been more or less an accident that he's sure was meant to happen.

"Yeah," Shino chuckles, giving him a tight squeeze. "Yeah, you're right."

---

Tekkadan insists on throwing them a party before a wedding date is even decided. Eugene is the first to know, the first to see the ring glinting on Yamagi's slender finger, and hell, the sigh of relief when he says, "Fucking finally," is truly impressive. Shino slaps him on the back and hums in agreement.

"So I'm your best man, right?" he asks later, bumping Shino in the shoulder in a familiar, playful gesture.

"Do you even have to ask?" Shino shrugs. "You knew how he felt before I did."

---

Shino is the one who decides on taking Yamagi's last name. Norba Gilmerton. It's a good look on him, he says, a badge of honor, and Yamagi can't do anything but blush from the tips of his ears down his neck and say, "That sounds good."

---

It's a small, intimate Japanese wedding. Every member of their precious found family present, both Tekkadan and the kids Shino takes care of at the orphanage. They wouldn't have it any other way.

The two of them write their own vows. Shino goes first; before anything else, he apologizes. Apologizes for his selfish obliviousness, apologizes for lost time, thanks Yamagi for loving him for so long. Yamagi's shoulders are shaking before Shino can even finish. Shino swears he sees Eugene swiping at tears off to the side, but Eugene refuses to admit to it until he's had too much to drink and he's draped over Shino's shoulder and hiccuping congratulations, recounting memories of the three of them.

Yamagi's vow is much shorter and sweeter: "I can't remember a time I wasn't in love with you," he says, and Shino melts right then and there, "and I don't want to."

Shino swoops in and kisses him before anyone in the room can get another word out. The idea of being unmarried to Yamagi for just one more second is unbearable.

---

When Shino plans to sweep Yamagi off his feet, his expectations are turned upside down all over again. He should be used to it, but Yamagi is still full of surprises after all this time. Again and again, he always has been. He jumps into Shino's arms before Shino can even move a muscle, and later, long after the reception is over, Yamagi is pushing him against the door and kissing him senseless before Shino even has the chance to breathe.

Their lips are red and swollen by the time they make it to the bed. Yamagi straddles him, hands cupping his cheeks and head dipped down, bangs brushing Shino's forehead, eyes lidded. Shino has always loved this, this angle, this picture of Yamagi looking down at him with dark pupils.

"Norba Gilmerton," he says, and just about all Shino can do is offer him a helpless little smile.

"Norba Gilmerton," Yamagi says again, and again, in between slow, chaste kisses. "Norba Gilmerton."

"Yeah," Shino manages when he's unbuttoning Yamagi's shirt. "Norba Shino Gilmerton."

He rubs soothing circles over his back when Yamagi crushes their lips together and practically sobs in response.
